⚠️ This article is for informational purposes only. If your pet is showing signs of an emergency, seek veterinary care immediately — do not delay.

Quick Reference: Absolutely not — it's toxic!

⚠️ Use caution

  • White chocolate contains very little theobromine, but is still not recommended

✗ Not safe

  • Dark chocolate (highest theobromine content)
  • Baking chocolate
  • Milk chocolate
  • Cookies, cakes, or treats containing chocolate
  • Cocoa powder

Why Is Chocolate Toxic to Dogs?

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine — two compounds that dogs cannot metabolize effectively. According to the ASPCA, theobromine is the primary cause of chocolate toxicity in dogs.

Different types of chocolate carry different levels of risk:

  • Baking chocolate / cocoa powder: Most dangerous — highest theobromine concentration
  • Dark chocolate: Very dangerous
  • Milk chocolate: Moderately dangerous
  • White chocolate: Very low theobromine, but still high in fat and sugar — not suitable for dogs

Signs of Poisoning

Symptoms can appear within 6–12 hours of your dog eating chocolate and may include:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Excessive thirst and frequent urination
  • Rapid heart rate or irregular heartbeat
  • Restlessness and tremors
  • In severe cases: seizures and loss of consciousness

What to Do in an Emergency

  1. Contact your vet immediately — tell them what type of chocolate your dog ate and roughly how much
  2. Don't try to induce vomiting yourself — unless your vet specifically instructs you to
  3. Keep the packaging — bring it to the vet so they can check the cacao content
